Our juice is better than yours Fiasco…..

With vintage looming a few growers are getting seriously nervous around here.  We’ve commented on the over supply (here in Marlborough) in previous posts and on the general situation.  It’s pretty obvious that there is going to be a bit of pain for those that have not got contracts nor processing space in those wineries that offer such services.  Fiasco has fielded a number of calls now from growers with no home for their fruit.

One particular grower from the Awatere called us offering his block and said: “We’ve got gold medal winning fruit on offer but our usual winery doesn’t want it anymore.  I see you guys have only won a bronze, why don’t you have ours instead –  it’s obviously better than yours.”

“Mmmm let me think about that. No. ”

It’s also well known that a few people have been offering their 2009 crop for free so long as a contract gets signed for a three year period from 2010 on.  Desperate times, desperate measures I guess.

You’ve got to feel sorry for these people for a number of reasons.  There is a fair bit of sweat involved in producing a crop, and a bit spills on the carpet grovelling around the bank manager too!  Think back this time last year and everything was tickety-boo  – there just wasn’t enough Sauvignon Blanc.

Things are tight on the shelf too.  Prices are coming down and I mean way down, wineries are pumping out second, third, fourth, and fifth labels at their hearts content to clear stock.

Us here at Fiasco…… we’ve got a big fight on our hands!!

Ohh, some good news, our contract has been finalised with a distributor in Brisbane.  Let’s just all forget about the under-arm incident, Aussies are great people!!

    Hi Aaron,
Nice to read a frank assessment of the viticulture situation from people in the industry. Times could be tight for all of us here in Marlborough for a while. Good luck with vintage.

People will always drink good wine.

PS. picked up a bottle of your Gewurztraminer tonight by accident (meant to buy Sav) but I think my Mum is a fan now.

I’m pleased your Mum enjoyed the wine Alistair. It would be good to fast forward 18 months and see how we are sitting!

    Cheers
