A beautiful day for bud rubbing

Awoke to a gorgeous day and even better it’s Marlborough Anniversary Day!  Marlborough is currently second only to Auckland in its population growth and on a day like today I can see why people would want to live here.   The environment here has always been attractive to people in terms of lifestyle, but the wine industry is now providing the jobs to make it a realistic possibility for folk to live here.

I took to the Wither Hills for a walk…

You can see across the Wairau plains and make out the multitude of vineyards, and on out to Cloudy Bay.   Two of the biggest wine players in Marlborough are named after this landscape: Wither Hills and Cloudy Bay.  But if you look really carefully you can just make out our place and I’m sure with a good telescope you could spot the Fiascos going on! ;-) In all honesty the kids have actually been great this long weekend.  We spent quite a few hours bud rubbing yesterday and they surprised me with their persistence (amazing what a bit of bribery can do and it was convenient that the local fireworks display was on last night).   Bud rubbing can be hard on the back as it involves going from one plant to the next and either bending over or crouching down to rub off any buds and shoots coming off the ‘trunk’ as you can see in the photo below.  Funnily enough Aaron and I seemed to find it harder on the ole body than the kids!

Everything is so green at the moment after our wettest winter in a long time, it makes for a damn scenic ‘backyard.’

And yes I must admit you can make out a plane headed north in this photo.  It’s easy to forget that 3 in every 4 New Zealanders live in the North Island, I’m surprised the country hasn’ t tipped up :-)   We are going to have to get marketing up North soon, otherwise we risk missing 75 % of the population!
